Elvira Mistress of the Dark

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark, and the hottest late night horror host on the planet has come out of the closet. My gut reaction: So? Look, not to downplay the struggle, because I’d never want to belittle what they go through, as it often results in the worst sort of things people can do to each other, so it genuinely takes real courage. I’m a straight white dude, and will never know, but I’ve heard enough to be informed that it is rough, and my deepest sympathies to anyone who isn’t in a place where they feel like they can be honest about who they are. Truly. But it’s 2021. And if you didn’t think Elvira was at least capable of swinging both ways, you have been fooling yourself. My point is, it shouldn’t be news. She shouldn’t have had to hide this “dirty” little secret to protect the image of the character she plays. It’s not like she murders puppies for fun.

Reality being what it is though, I’m glad she’s brave enough and feels like she can be honest and I’m really happy for her. I’ve always had a crush on Elvira, despite the age gap. That will NEVER change (I am willing to bet she isn’t about to start murdering puppies, at least). She’s a fierce spooky woman, and just a fascinating person. If you don’t have her new autobiography, Cruelly Yours, get it. It’s on Amazon, you can get the ebook, audio book, buy it through her website and probably everywhere books exist. I have my copy (got the audio book, think I may still want to grab a print or at least digital copy as well for the pictures), haven’t started it yet, but I intend to very soon. I’m hearing great things about it, and if I wasn’t in the middle of Sandman Act 2, I’d be on it already. I’m a slow listener.

Have you checked out the Peacock streaming service yet? Not a sponsor, not an ad, just me, genuinely surprised at what they have there this month. You really can’t beat instant access to the Universal Studios Monsters Classics. That’s right, they got the old black and white monster movies that have become spooky season staples around here. They also have the Nightmare on Elm Street Collection, Friday the 13th Collection, Phantasm Collection, Child’s Play Collection, etc… And speaking of Elvira, they have her series of old late night horror hosted films as well. So if you’ve been living under a rock and have no idea who Elvira is, go check out Peacock. Thank me later.

I’m also excited because later this month, the latest chapter in my personal favorite slasher series will be delivered directly to my eager eyeballs, via Peacock. Of course, I’m talking about Halloween Kills. I can’t give much away, because I’ve personally avoided everything about this movie except where and when, so I can see it. But I did hear, Laurie Strode returns!!! Jamie Lee Curtis, back again, the One True Queen of Screams. What more could you ask for? Maybe for them to stop killing her off? Come on, its JLC. Hail to the Queen.

Lastly, but certainly beastly, I mean, not least, I’ve paid for my pre-order of Metroid DREAD! Samus Aran returns to the 2D side scrolling exploration/run-and-gun action of this beloved series in one week, and I’ve got mine downloaded already (can’t play it yet, that’s just the nature of pre-orders, sadly). Will I stream some gameplay for your enjoyment? Perhaps. I’ve yet to get my Twitch channel finally started, but I hope to real soon. Stay tuned!
